Student’s Life

Japanese Language Class

Though Japanese language proficiency is not required for study and research purposes in the Department of Civil Engineering, the basic Japanese language abilities will help students to carry out daily activities such as travel, shopping, sightseeing, etc. The Department of Civil Engineering offers its own Japanese language courses focusing special needs of students admitted to the special graduate program in English. Basically, international students belonging to department of the Civil Engineering can attend these classes.

Purpose of Course

  • Japanese language as well as Japanese culture, customs, and a way of thinking of Japanese people.
  • Helping international students to adjust to their life in Japan smoothly.
  • Guide and instruct foreign students in many aspects such as communicating with people in public offices, applying for documents, seeing medical doctors, and counseling if they have problems in their life.
  • Offer cross-cultural circumstances in our class, which is organized by students from various countries.
  • We can have a chance to share our problems and difficulties in our class.

Student Life at YNU

International Student Center

Consultation counter at the International Education Center, counselor for international students (about once a week), "Yokohama National University Admission Guide" for foreign students (Japanese / English / Chinese / Korean), "Graduate School Guide" for foreign students (Japanese / English)

Student dormitories

Priority occupancy in university dormitories for international students, private apartment guidance service by the University Cooperatives

Japanese culture experience

"Visit tour for international students" (about 5 times a year, for 40 people), homestay program

Regional exchange

Various extracurricular events by international exchange circles and citizen volunteers, regular cultural introduction activities by international students (Talk time, China Café, etc.), "Moon-viewing party" sponsored by the president (exchange meeting for international students and related parties, once a year), Official activities of international student associations

Life and welfare

Orientation for international students, life guidebook for international students, e-mail newsletter for international students (about twice a week), religious consideration (providing halal food in the school cafeteria, setting up a halal food refrigerator and prayer place) , Bilingual display on campus (Japanese / English) , "Consultation Desk" where students can feel free to consult about anything (International students available)
