Examination format

Examination is conducted for each specialization of each department. However, there are also courses where test subjects can be selected in accordance with the background of the candidate. For example, for Specialization in Architecture and Urban Culture, one can select subjects from both “Architecture Area” and “Urban Culture Area (= Art and Culture Area)”, and for Specialization in Infrastructure and Urban Society, one can select examination of either “Civil Engineering Area” or “Local Community Area”. One can take the test with their own favorite subjects. For example, one can opt for Architectural History, Urban Planning and Structural Studies from Architecture Area; Film / Video Theory and Contemporary Art Theory from Urban Culture Area; civil engineering-related subjects from Civil Engineering Area; and subjects in humanities from Local Community Area.

※The special entrance exam for international students is conducted apart from the general entrance exam in the following specializations and fields.

  • Specialization in Architecture and Urban Culture (However, only for the candidates of Architecture and Building Science field)

  • Specialization in Infrastructure and Urban Society (However, only for the candidates of Civil Engineering field)
  • International Graduate School of Infrastructure (IGSI)

As no special entrance exam for international students is conducted for the candidates for Urban Culture Area of Specialization in Architecture and Urban Culture, and those for Area Studies Area of Specialization in Culture and Specialization in Infrastructure and Urban Society, international candidates are required to take the general entrance exam.

TA・RA system

IUI offers well-developed TA (Teaching Assistant) and RA (Research Assistant) systems in order to contribute to research / educational experience and career of the Graduate School students.
While rewarding students for their service records, the systems have opened the ways for students of Master’s Program to mainly assist undergraduate education as TA, and students of Doctoral Program to mainly assist undergraduate and graduate education as RA. ,

About Special Graduate Program [Infrastructure] (Master’s and Doctoral Programs)

This program accepts admissions in October and is intended for international students with the scholarship sponsored by the MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan). All the education from lectures to thesis writing is imparted in English language.
